Cardiff University, United Kingdom

Country of origin: South Africa
Study course: Bachelor in Human and Social Science

Why did you decide to study abroad?
I was drawn to the UK, and to Cardiff University specifically due to the nature of my degree choice (to study with a interdisciplinary approach to psychology and social science rather than specialising too early with a single option). I wanted to go where lecturers and professors would be enthusiastic about their subject whilst still being involved in contemporary research. In my home country I may not have been able to access all the facilities I can here nor have found a degree programme that allowed me to tailor the modules to my desired research interest and career goals.

What made you decide on this university?
Cardiff University’s School of Social Science offers a BPS (British Psychological Society) accredited that is not matched by any other university in the UK! This degree allows me to study psychology alongside sociology, ethnography, social policy, education, criminology, and several interdisciplinary electives.

How is your experience of studying abroad?
I grew up in South Africa until emigrating to Malaysia and starting middle school there. Both of these countries are multicultural at heart and have shaped my experience when studying. With an international school teacher as a mother, we continent hopped often which led me to conclude my studies in the Netherlands. Overall these travels combined with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, have given me a well-rounded experience of studying abroad. Each time I move between countries or even on holiday, I love immersing myself in a new culture and learning about the customs, history, and language of the region. Not to mention trying the local delicacies.

Why do you think others should not miss out on studying at your university
The capital of Wales allows for cultural immersion within an ancient culture and a new language for those eager for a challenge, while still offering all communication through the medium of English. Cardiff University is a member of the Russel Group for its excellent research (one of the top 5 universities in the UK for its quality and innovation of research), and is in the top 100 in the world for its proportion of international students. The campus stretches along the student high street and the heritage areas and into beautiful Victorian gardens as well as the buzzing centre of the Welsh capital city – yet all a comfortable walking distance. Cardiff University offers quality education to a diverse student population, where one’s ability and willingness to learn is encouraged and met with equal drive to inspire the new generation.
