University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Country of origin: The Netherlands
Study course: Master in Artificial Intelligence
Why did you decide to study abroad?
In my second year of Bachelors, I wanted to experience more of the student lifestyle. The people around me were already getting too familiar to me and so did my university. It was time for me to explore some different student life, in a different culture! This curiosity of mine made me look at my options abroad. During this search it became clear that I wanted to be familiar with the activities of my field in different countries. A second reason was to force myself to be independent in a new environment, away from my family and friends. I thought it would be a good experience to learn from, helping me later on in my career.
What made you decide on this university?
After doing my Bachelors at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), I decided to change to the University of Amsterdam (UvA) for my Masters. The Faculty of Science at the UvA is highly rated and offers very good research areas. The Science Building is also very pleasant for a students; it is situated in the east corner of Amsterdam (Science Park), surrounded by lots of green. In the area students find all the facilities they need. The university is very internationally-oriented; many professors/students from abroad come here.
The capital Amsterdam offers the best of the country; the canals, nightlife, nearby beach, and student community, along with cool startups and big companies. The city is just the right size; small enough to bump into your friends ones in a while, big enough to never get bored. There are always cool spots of the city which you have never been. We go by bike everywhere. The historical center knows many beautiful buildings, some of which are actually part of the university and you can just study there. Dutch people are relaxed, open-minded, and want to get to know you!
How is your experience of studying abroad?
My experience of studying abroad has been one of my best times in my life. I had the best roommates, lived next to the university, became a member of the rowing club, and made plenty of local and international friends. I would have loved to stay there longer. I filled my weekends with trips to different cities/villages or landscapes. In the rowing club I experienced what it’s like to exercise very intensively. With the people I met there, I often went to social drinks/clubs. I still see them when I visit them or they visit me.
Why do you think others should not miss out on studying at your university
The university is situated right in the center of Amsterdam; so you’re able to to get to know the city and its people. The student community is very big. However, Amsterdam is not only known for its student community. Because it’s the capital of The Netherlands, its the place to be for all social, business and cultural activities! The education level is highly rated; so the environment challenges you for your further career.
