Oslo and Akershus University College, Oslo, Norway
Country of origin: USA
Study course: Master in International Social Welfare and Health Policy
Why did you decide to study abroad?
Primarily. I wanted to pursue my social welfare Master’s degree in a country that has implemented one of the most successful welfare and healthcare systems in the world. However, it helped that the Norwegian schooling is 100% free to all who are enrolled. I’m getting a free degree!
What made you decide on this university?
Oslo and Akershus University College (HiOA) is an institution that specializes in a teaching method that allows us to apply what we learn in the classroom. I am learning practical use of social and health policy so I can apply it in my career. Also, my program is globally-oriented; my classmates are from all around the world, and it’s great being able to discuss what we learn in class with those who have had firsthand experience in each topic.
How is your experience of studying abroad?
I am enjoying studying away from my home country. It’s filled with everyday learning experiences (outside the classroom) and I feel as though I’m expanding my views on the world. There are definitely challenges; but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Why do you think others should not miss out on studying at your university
HiOA is one of the smaller public institutions in Oslo. So if you are looking for smaller class sizes and more attention from professors, it’s a good fit. HiOA tries to put an emphasis on including international students. There are many international organizations/events for exchange students. Also the location is great, the university is right in the middle of Oslo.
